Fort Wood Neighborhood Association Newsletter for June 2007
JUNE POOL PARTY
On Sunday, June 24th, the first Fort Wood Pool Party of the summer will be held at the Fort Wood Apartments Pool on the corner of Clark Street and Fort Wood Place, from 5:30-8:30 PM. The neighborhood association will provide pizza and soft drinks, plus plates, cups and napkins. Other drinks, sides, and pool essentials (chairs and sunscreen) are BYO.
Another Pool Party is planned for Sunday, August 26th—so, mark your calendars!
MAY EVENTS
Thanks to all who worked to help clean up and beautify our neighborhood during our “Sparkle Weekend” in May, whether you worked in your own yard or elsewhere. Thanks, too, to Amanda Tarr for arranging for the dumpster for trash disposal. The Fort Wood Estate/Yard Sale was great fun, too—a chance to clean out the basement/garage/attic, visit with old friends and meet some new ones, as well! We hope to continue this as an annual event—so, plan accordingly next year when you do your spring cleaning!
Thanks to those who attended the May neighborhood meeting where we elected officers, ate hotdogs, chips, and lemonade (thanks again to Amanda Tarr!), and toured Cynthia Watson’s lovely gardens. Officers elected were:
President – Tom Bibler
Vice President – Scott Shaw
Secretary – Janice Heath
Treasurer – Robert Stanley
At-Large Board Members – Amanda Tarr and Catherine Martin
[Continuing Board Members – Bea Lurie, Hal Baker, David Harris, Mary Ann Zaha]
WELCOME
Jon Paul and Laura Davis have recently moved to 1017 Oak Street. We are pleased to welcome this young couple to the Fort Wood community and hope to see them at up-coming neighborhood events.
FORT WOOD HOLIDAY TOUR OF HOMES
In the coming months you will begin to hear more and more about the upcoming Fort Wood Tour of Homes, currently scheduled for Friday evening, November 30th. In the past, this has been a terrific opportunity to showcase the neighborhood, as well as allow us, as residents, to enjoy the season and the beautiful area within which we live. This year, proceeds will be given to support our own Orange Grove Center on Vine Street. Please consider a volunteer position on any one of the following committees: Publicity, Sponsorship, Safety and Security, Decorating, F&B/Entertainment, Home Owners and Ticket Sales. We are counting on you for a successful event! Contact Catherine Martin (267-6505) or Jackie Cook (266-1649).
NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY AND IMPROVEMENTS
The next general meeting of the Fort Wood Neighborhood Association is planned for Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 7:00 PM. The theme for the meeting will be safety issues and other neighborhood improvements. Desserts, along with coffee and cokes, will be served.
HOLIDAY PARTY ON DECEMBER 9TH
The Fort Wood Annual Holiday Chili Supper will be held on Sunday, December 9th, 2007 at the home of Nancy and Tom Bibler, 905 Oak Street. Bring your favorite chili or a side dish (salad, bread or dessert). Plates, cups, and soft drinks will be provided. Festivities will begin at 4:00 PM.
CONGRATULATIONS, JOHN AND TRACY
A wedding was held in our new gazebo in Perkins Park this spring when John Dever, Jr. and Tracy Poole were married there in April. John, who has been living at 840 Vine Street, is the son of Susan and John Dever of Lookout Mountain. The Devers have been property owners in Fort Wood and have been active in the Fort Wood community for many years. We offer our very best wishes to Tracy and John and hope they will continue to take an active part in Fort Wood activities.
NEIGHBORHOOD ALERT!
Two families in our area (the Heaths on Oak Street and the Eichanthals on Vine Street) have reported finding strangers standing in their living room or foyer when a front door was left unlocked for a brief period (while the family was at home). It is not known whether these incidents are related, but it probably would be wise to be very cautious about leaving a door unlocked, even when you’re at home. In both cases, the strangers left quickly as soon as they were noticed.
PERKINS PARK WATERING SYSTEM
Many thanks to Helen and Brad Cansler, 850 Vine Street, who have put in an irrigation system for Perkins Park. Thanks to the Canslers, our lovely pocket park will remain lush and beautiful throughout the year. It’s a wonderful enhancement for the gardens, and will be appreciated by everyone who enjoys the park.
FORT WOOD NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION DUES
Please send your 2007 membership dues ($15 single, $25 family/corporate/organization), payable to the Fort Wood Neighborhood Association (FWNA), to Tom Bibler at 905 Oak Street, if you have not already done so.
